Geocache Description:

This cache location will take you to a place where you can see the American Bison, an animal that was once the most widespread herbivore species on the continent.  An estimated 30 million of them roamed the plains when the first explorers arrived. People were slaughtering them by the millions for food, pelts, or just for sport. By 1900, only a little over 1,000 bison could be found.  Thanks to conservationists, they were kept from going extinct, and through breeding programs we can now see more and more of this magestic animal.  Many of the bison of today are not pure wild bison, but have been crossbred with cattle.

If you want a better view of the bison herd (depending on the time of day), they like to graze in the pasture beside Maple Valley Road.  One day this spring, I saw a man standing outside his vehicle very close to the fence, and I wondered what he was up to.  Then I saw a little form on the ground, trying to get up.  I think he had just witnessed the birth of a bison calf.  You don't see that every day...

This is a drive-by, so be careful.  There's enough room to get your car fully off the road, but be safe.  This is a micro cache.  Please bring your own pen to sign the log.
