Geocache Description:

Eesti kohanimeraamat pakub pika, kuid segase loetelu võimalustest, kust see Lõuna-Eesti pärl oma nime on saanud:

üks ajaloolane on seda seostanud Hellenurme ja Elva jõe nimega, mida on juba 1638. aastal esitatud kujul Helwejegge, ja välistada ei saavat ka lähtesõna helve, millega on liitunud oja vms sõna;

teise arvates koosneb baltipärane nimi osisest hel(le) ehk kirgas või selge ja veekogunimesid moodustavast va-liitest;

The Estonian place name book offers a long but confusing list of possibilities from which this pearl of South Estonia got its name:

one historian has associated it with the name of Hellenurme and Elva river, which have been presented in the form Helwejegge already in 1638, and leaves a possibility for ’helve’ as the source word, to which ’a stream’ or similar word has joined;

according to the second, this Baltic name consists of the element hel(le) (clear) and the ending -va wich indicates to water;

the third suggested that the name of the town came from the river of the same name, which may have been obtained from the village of Elva in the Otepää parish area, which in turn came from the supposed personal name Elev(a), which he compared with the word elevil  (anxious; flooded).

It all sounds like a fog of assumptions and bingo of words that still leaves everything open.

But things are getting more exciting: just as the above assumptions are considered valid, the origin of Elva's name from Swedish or Georgian is considered unfounded. The story of Swedish would have been that the landlord of Meeri built eleven cottages around Lake Arbi at the end of the 19th century, around which the city was later formed, and eleven is elva in Swedish. In Georgian, elva means lightning and the story goes that city got its name from the construction of the Tartu-Riga railway by Georgian workers.

So there’s a lot of room for interpretations. I stick to what I heard when living in Elva as a child: elva means 'eleven’ in Swedish, and Elva got its name from the fact that it was eleven historic miles from Tartu. Had it been twelve, the city would have been named Tolva.

This cache invites you to discover the heart of Elva and Lake Arbi. Please be gentle with the cache, do not use force, hide from the muggles. Bring swimsuit or skates and, as always, a pen and a good mood!
