We are now back amongst the working buildings of the main quarry.
You have walked past the Blacksmith's shop which used to be the home of the Sheep Poo Paper factory, and the old stores and mortuary.
Behind the chain link fencing, there is a thriving business in grading and selling slate chippings from the waste slate.
High up on the left there is the huge slate cavern, named Alma (after a Crimean War battle). Extraction of slate in this area did not cease until 2002, having been worked on an industrial basis since 1810.
