Geocache Description:

You are looking for a super small magnetic micro.  There is no pen for the log and tweezers may help to remove the log.  You do not need to enter the cemmetry to find the cache.

The cache is located near to the entrance of the grounds of St Edmund's Pleasance.  A chapel was on this site was mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086.  Burials returned to the site in the 1690's due to overcrowding at Holy Trinity.  Using this area as a burial ground which was higher than the church tower led to the rhyme:

'Dirty Dartford, perculiar people, bury their dead above the steeple.'

Within the grounds the headstones to the graves have been removed and relocated around the edge.  The site still has the tombs of important people to Dartford such as John Hall and James Sharp, as well as a large monument to the Dartford Martyrs which is a memorial to three of Kent's Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in 1555 .

I have placed a cache here to draw people to a plaque which has been placed in memory of Richard Trevithick who was the inventor of the steam locomotive.  Although he was born in Cornwall, Richard left England for South America.  During his prime he was a well respected and popular figure.

After he had been working in Dartford for about a year, following his return to England, Trevithick was taken ill with pnuemonia and had to retire to bed at the Bull Hotel, where he was lodging at the time. Following a week's confinement in bed he died on the morning of 22nd April 1833. He was penniless, and no relatives or friends. His colleagues at Hall's works made a collection for his funeral expenses and acted as bearers. They also paid a night watchman to guard his grave at night to deter grave robbers, as body snatching was common at that time.

There is a road on Temple Hill named after Richard, called Trevithick Drive and there is a blue plaque on the wall outside the pub in Dartford where Richard died.
