Organisations internationales

Depuis plus d’un siècle, Genève et la Suisse accueillent un grand nombre d’organisations internationales. Cette présence est une composante essentielle de l’identité de la Ville et participe à son rayonnement.
Il est habituel de situer la naissance de la vocation internationale de Genève en 1863, avec la création du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) par Henry Dunant. Mais le véritable envol se situe en 1919 avec la création de la Société des Nations, ancêtre de l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU) et de l'Organisation internationale du travail.

ORGANISATION MONDIALE DU COMMERCE - OMC - WTO

Le Centre William-Rappard, situé dans le parc homonyme, dans la ville de Genève, en Suisse, a été construit entre 1923 et 1926 pour héberger le Bureau international du travail (BIT). C'était le premier bâtiment conçu pour abriter une organisation internationale à Genève.
Albert Thomas en est devenu le premier directeur.
En 1975, le BIT a déménagé au Grand-Saconnex et, en 1977, le Centre William-Rappard a été occupé par le secrétariat de l'Accord général sur les tarifs douaniers et le commerce (GATT), le Haut Commissariat des Nations unies pour les réfugiés, et la bibliothèque de l'Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement. En 1995, l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) a remplacé le GATT et est devenu le principal occupant du Centre William-Rappard.

Office des Nations Unies à Genève - ONUG - UNOG

Situé au Palais des Nations, l’Office des Nations Unies à Genève (ONUG) est le bureau qui représente le Secrétaire général à Genève.
Eleanor Roosevelt, épouse de Franklin, en tant que diplomate joue un rôle déterminant dans la promotion du multilatéralisme et la création de l’ONU.
Elle préside la Commission des droits de l'homme de l'Organisation des Nations unies, chargée de rédiger la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme.

COMITÉ INTERNATIONAL CROIX-ROUGE - CICR - ICRC

Après avoir occupé de multitude d'endroit à Genève comme le Palais de l'Athénée, le palais Eynard, la villa Moynier ou encore l'hôtel Métropole, le CICR s'installe en 1946 dans l'ancien hôtel Carlton que vient de quitter le Bureau International du Travail.
En 1988, le Musée Internationale de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge ouvre ses portes.

ORGANISATION MONDIALE DE LA SANTÉ - OMS - WHO

L’OMS est l’autorité directrice et coordinatrice, dans le domaine de la santé. Le site accueille 16 bâtiments, donc le principal a été construit entre 1962 et 1966.
Un autre bâtiment remarquable est inauguré en 2006 consacré à ONUSIDA.
Plusieurs oeuvres témoignent de l'éradication de plusieurs maladies au fil des années.

ORGANISATION INTERNATIONALE DU TRAVAIL - OIT - ILO

Elle est fondée le 11 avril 1919, à la suite de la Première Guerre mondiale.
Le Bureau international du Travail est le secrétariat permanent de l’Organisation internationale du Travail, et a emménagé à Genève à l’été 1920.
Construit à partir de 1969, ce vaisseau de 225 mètres a été inauguré le 12 novembre 1974. Il est l’oeuvre des architectes Eugène Beaudoin, Pier Luigi Nervi et Alberto Camenzind.
Le bâtiment a été rénové par étapes entre 2015 et 2019.

For more than a century, Geneva and Switzerland have hosted a large number of international organizations. This presence is an essential component of the City's identity and contributes to its influence.
It is usual to situate the birth of Geneva's international vocation in 1863, with the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) by Henry Dunant. But the real take off came in 1919 with the creation of the League of Nations, ancestor of the United Nations (UN) and the International Labor Organization.

WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION - OMC - WTO

The Center William-Rappard, located in the park of the same name, in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, was built between 1923 and 1926 to house the International Labor Office (ILO). It was the first building designed to house an international organization in Geneva.
Albert Thomas became its first director.
In 1975 the ILO moved to Grand-Saconnex and in 1977 the Center William-Rappard was occupied by the secretariat of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the United Nations High Commission for refugees, and the library of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. In 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) replaced the GATT and became the main occupant of the Center William-Rappard.

United Nations Office at Geneva - ONUG - UNOG

Located at the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is the office representing the Secretary-General in Geneva.
Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of Franklin, as a diplomat was instrumental in promoting multilateralism and the creation of the United Nations.
She chairs the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, responsible for drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS COMMITTEE - CICR - ICRC

After having occupied a multitude of places in Geneva such as the Palais de l'Athénée, the Palais Eynard, the Villa Moynier and the Hôtel Métropole, the ICRC moved into the former Carlton hotel in 1946, which has just left the International Labor Office.
In 1988, the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent opened its doors.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION - OMC - WHO

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority in the field of health. The site hosts 16 buildings, so the main one was built between 1962 and 1966.
Another remarkable building was inaugurated in 2006 dedicated to UNAIDS.
Several works testify to the eradication of several diseases over the years.

INTERNATIONAL LABOR ORGANIZATION - OIT - ILO

It was founded on April 11, 1919, following the First World War.
The International Labor Office is the permanent secretariat of the International Labor Organization, and moved to Geneva in the summer of 1920.
