Geocache Description:

Cloverdale is a 20 acre parcel donated to the town when the nearby Apple D'or development was built.

Cloverdale was originaly a dairy farm owned by Irish imagrants during the 1890s. Apple orchards used to surround the property before the new developments were built. Originaly Route 2 followed the path of what is now Mannion Place, noatbly keeping the Cloverdale farm in one piece. The barn was built near the road and the cows grazed on the meadows down below by the brook, all was well for Cloverdale. But during the 1930s with the new speedy cars, taking the turn up hilly Mannion Place became a hastle. Soon it was decided that 2A would skip the turn alltogether. Instead prefering a more direct path that just happened to cut Cloverdale Farm right in two. The barn on one side, and the fields on the other. So what was a farmer to do when his cows are cut off from the barn? Well we can't go over it, and we can't go around it, so the cows must go under it! And so the cow tunnel was born! A concrete tunnel was built under 2A to move the cows from one side to the other. A solution that worked suprisingly well as the cow tunnel was used all the way up to the farms closing. Today the tunnel can still be seen through the reeds during fall and winter when they are less thick. You can still see the inprints the boards of the concrete mold made in the passage.

Today Cloverdale is a lovley conservation land stuffed full of Boardwalks & Rock Walls. Most promenades were put up after the beavers moved in, flooding much of the meadow. Birds are plentiful so bring binoculars! The part of the walk where the geocache is placed looks very    much like a fairy tale scene in summer and spring. The container is a small plastic jar with a screw on top. Bring bug spray! wink
