Béluga - Beluga Whale - Qilalugaq
Delphinapterus leucas

The beluga whale is one of the smallest species of cetaceans. Its bulbous head, called a melon, and its often white, sometimes pale grey colour skin makes it a very recognizable animal. Belugas have unfused neck vertebra, which allows for a wide range of movement. Their upturned mouth looks like a smile, and they are often seen "nodding". Belugas are extremely social; they live, hunt and migrate in pods varying in size (a few whales to hundreds of them) primarly in the Artic Sea and surrounding waters. A small subgroup summers as far south as the Gulf of the St. Lawrence river. They find their food using echolocation, and because of the sounds they make, are often called the "canary of the sea". They are an endangered species.
