Sea otters are marine mammals native to the north Pacific Ocean. They live near the shore since they dive to get food, commonly sea urchins, from the floor of the ocean. Although they can walk on land, they are able to spend their entire lives in the sea. By the end of the 19th century they had been hunted almost to extinction since their fur, the most dense in the animal kingdom, was highly valued. Although their populations have rebounded due to conservation efforts but they are still considered an endangered species.
