Before we take the trip around the world, it is nice to have some information about the different parts of the world that we are going to.

South America is a continent (one of the 7 continents), most of which is south of the equator. South America lies between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and is connected to North America by the Panama Canal in Central America.

South America is the world's fourth largest continent. South America has a mixed landscape with huge rivers, rainforest, desert and high mountains. The 6570 km long Amazon River runs through the Amazon jungle. The river basin covers a huge area of 8 million. km². The Andes Mountains stretch all the way from north to south on the western side of the continent. The mountains are relatively new and are formed by the Nazca plate pushing itself under the South American plate, which is thereby pushed up. The heights reach all the way up to 6959 meters at Aconcagua in Argentina and down to 105 meters below the earth's surface. The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on the planet.
