Inden vi tager turen jorden rundt, så er det rart at have lidt information omkring de forskellige verdensdele, som vi skal rundt til.
Aprica (latin) for "solrig" eller aphrike (græsk) for "uden kulde" er grundlaget for navnet Afrika.
Afrika er den næststørste verdensdel. Afrika er 8000 km fra nord til syd med ækvator omtrent på midten og med hav hele vejen rundt bortset fra ved Suez-kanalen i Egypten. Klimaet er tropisk omkring ækvator, og subtropisk længst mod nord og syd. Middeltemperaturen er derfor høj over hele kontinentet, men nedbørsmængde og mønster varierer meget fra regnskov til ørkenområder, fra kyst til indland, fra nord til syd. Fra det vestligste punkt Kap Verde til Ras Hafun i Somalia er der omkring 7400 km. Kystlinjen er 26.000 km lang.
Afrikanerne kan grupperes efter om de lever nord eller syd for Sahara. Efter de fleste overslag indeholder Afrika mere end tusind sprog.
