Before we take the trip around the world, it is nice to have some information about the different parts of the world that we are going to.

Oceania is the smallest continent. Unlike other continents, this does not include a predominantly contiguous land area. On the contrary, the area consists of a large number of larger and smaller islands, of which New Guinea, Australia and Tasmania can be considered to belong to the same continent, as the water depth between them does not exceed 200 m, whereas the sea depth elsewhere in the Pacific Ocean exceeds 4,000 m.

The islands are volcanic or formed by corals. The Pacific Islands are spread out over a huge sea area; 150 mio. km2, corresponding to 850 km2 of sea for every 1 km2 of land.

In terms of population, Australia and New Zealand are characterized by a predominantly immigrant, mainly Europid, population, while the population on the smaller islands is predominantly Polynesian.
