Geocache Description:

I do not speak Hebrew, but I understand that it has no word for ‘history’. The closest word for it is memory.
-David Miliband

Cocke County History Series: A cache series celebrating the history and people of Cocke County, Tennessee.

Background: Like most East Tennessee counties, Cocke County was impacted by the Tennessee Valley Authority, part of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Here in the winter, you can see the old Morristown highway running across what used to be farmland but is now a lake bottom. Abandoned silos mark the sites where barns used to stand. Although Cocke County did not see as much land lost as some other counties, it still uprooted families here in the Dutch Bottoms area, sending them in search of higher ground when Douglas Dam was completed in 1943 and the lake began to rise.
