Edward Teach (better known as Blackbeard) was a pirate operating around the West Indies and Eastern coast of the USA in the early 1700’s. While Great and Little Thatch are reportedly named after the famed pirate, there is little evidence that he ever sailed in the Virgin Islands, but from this stunning lookout, it is fun to imagine the pirates hiding out in Soper’s Hole in days past.
A relatively easy 30 minute uphill hike from either Soper’s Hole or Smugglers Cove, the path is maintained by the cellular phone companies and you will see their towers just past the lookout. On a clear day you can see right up Sir Francis Drakes Channel, the north shore of Tortola and across to St John and St Thomas in the USVI. Watch for jumping cactus in the rocks .....!
