Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the bustling and popular seaside town of Newport, and can be found as you walk along the coastal path towards Newport Sands beach (also known as 'Traeth Mawr', or 'Big Beach' in English).

There is a large lime kiln along this path, which formed the inspiration for this cache. Newport has two existing lime kilns (the other is by the Parrog beach, next to the Newport Boat Club. The Boat Club is itself the site of a former warehouse, laying testament to Newport's previous life as a bustling trading port).

Lime would have been brought in by boat and heated in these kilns (at temperatures approaching 1,000 degrees centigrade) to produce the lime mortars that were needed to build Newport's stone houses. It is thought that this particular kiln would also have provided farmers on this side of the estuary with lime for fertilising their fields.

It is not known exactly when these kilns fell out of use, but their decline is probably linked to the expansion of the rail network in the mid-19th century.

*Update, June '22* Please replace rocks/stones covering cache carefully; we have unfortunately had an incident where someone (presumably muggles) found the cache and threw its contents all over the place :-(
