About Salfords Station
Salfords station was originally built for the Monotype Corporation which had constructed a factory next to the railway line in 1899. This American company was a pioneer in the printing industry, developing both innovative printing presses as well as new print fonts. Many of their fonts are still in use today, such as Times New Roman, Gill Sans and Perpetua. At its peak in 1965 the company employed 2,500 people and was the largest factory in Surrey.
The company declined in the 1960's with the advent of computers, yet the firm is still operating in the USA as a specialist printer.
About the cache
There's been various incarnations of a cache here since 2008 ( GC1DJ10 SideTracked - Salfords), with the original being a simple pot at the foot of the footbridge stairs. I adopted the cache in 2017, and reinvented it as GC1DJ10 SideTracked - Salfords 2.0. This featured an elaborate field puzzle, Oyster-style smartcards and some rather fiddly padlocks, all needing to be solved whilst very close to a resident's back door!
This latest version goes back to the intent of the SideTracked series - a quick find for a weary traveller. The container is however custom-painted, and hopefully better than just a film pot. The hint makes the hide very easy - why not have a go without the hint and only use it if you get stuck?
There's no need to leave the footpath, or cross any fences to find the cache. Please use stealth as the path can be busy if a train does call at the station whilst you are searching. Tweezers recommended. Please replace exactly as found, using stealth so we can keep the secret !
