Geocache Description:

Ramsgate has a history rich in smuggling tales.   A smugglers' tunnel runs under the hostelry adjacent to this cache and joins with other tunnels in and around Pegwell Bay to form a complex which afforded the smugglers with a variety of routes and escapes.   Many locals were involved with the smuggling gangs including one gardener who was employed at the tavern but who met an unfortunate end.   He frequently swam out into Pegwell Bay to meet the smugglers boats and then made the return swim with contraband strapped to his body.   However one night he became entangled in a fishing net which had been laid in the bay.   The weight of the contraband prevented him from being able to free himself and he subsequently drowned.

Worth noting are the flint cottages across the road whose inhabitants supposedly "helped" in the trade.

PLEASE replace carefully - it may need a twist to make it sit flat.   Tweezers would be useful.
