Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity in which a player rolls a ball toward pins or another target. Bowling comes in different forms like candlestick or duck pin or ten pin. A sport that anyone can participate in, bowling has been around Egyptian times. Around 400AD, bowling began in Germany as a religious ritual used to cleanse oneself from sin by rolling a rock into a club or “kegel” representing the sinner. This led to bowlers being known as keglers. In the early 19th century, bowling alleys were primarily owned by Bars and Pubs. A culture of crime and gambling became associated with it, and eventually, Bowling gained a poor reputation. In 1841, Connecticut banned ownership of nine-pin lanes in an attempt to curb gambling and crime. To get around the law, players simply added one more pin, which nullified the ban and the modern game was born. There have been few changes to the rules of the sport since then. Bowling is an immensely popular sport around the world; the 70 million yearly players make it the United States' most popular participatory sport.
