I slutet av 1970-talet tillhörde Sverige de främsta länderna i världen när det gällde forskning och utveckling av vindkraft. Det svenska vindkraftprogrammet satsade på stora turbiner (2-3 MW), placerade på åttio meter höga torn. En prototyp byggdes i Maglarp utanför Trelleborg, den andra på Näsudden på Gotland.
Maglarps vindkraftverk (1982–1993) hade en navhöjd på 80 meter och en rotordiameter på 78 meter, toppeffekten var 3 MW. Kraftverket var i drift under 11 år, och hade vid sin stängning 1993 världsrekordet för största elproduktion från ett enskilt vindkraftverk.

At the end of the 1970s, Sweden was one of the leading countries in the world when it came to research and development of wind power. The Swedish wind power program invested in large turbines (2-3 MW), placed on eighty meter high towers. One prototype was built in Maglarp outside Trelleborg, the other on Näsudden on Gotland.
