I am very happy to adopt this earth from the Patchwork Rudel-many thanks for the great elaboration
Fossils
*****
Fossils The geology of Crete is very extensive and we can discover a lot from the history of the earth. When Crete was formed at the time of the transition between Tortonian and Messinian, the tectonics seem to have stabilized. At the same time, a general countersink took place. In the Pliocene, marine sediments spread. In central to eastern Crete, the gradual lowering resulted in a staircase of surf platforms on which relics of marine sediments and fossils from relatively great water depths have been preserved. In the late Pliocene to the early Quaternary Crete experienced a north tilt and elevation, which led to the current situation with its outlines. In addition, an earthquake in 365AD caused Crete to rise by 9m. This Earthcache should bring you closer to the topic of fossils.

What do we mean by a fossil?
It is a testimony to a past life in the history of the earth. It is at least 10,000 years or much older. These are the remains of living beings or their traces. It can also be e.g. Act in footprints. The term "petrification" is also often used, but this is not synonymous, as not every fossil has been mineralized. Petrified marine life is often found on mountains. Why ? At that time, the continental plates were distributed quite differently on the earth and over the course of millions of years mountains formed in places where there were previously oceans. As a result, fossilized remains of these creatures could reach land from the sea floor.

It is divided into body fossils and trace fossils. Body fossils are fossils that can be traced back directly to entire bodies or individual body parts of dead living beings. They are further differentiated according to their size.
Trace fossils or traces of life are all testimonies of living beings that cannot be traced back to their dead bodies, especially those legacies that were created by the activity of living beings. These include, for example, fossil-preserved footsteps, tracks, etc.

You have surely discovered fossils before. We'd also like to show you a few today. Please make sure that you wear sturdy shoes when you make your way here! In summer you should also think of enough drinks, there is no shade and it gets very hot on the way.

What do you have to do so that you can log this earth cache?
Send us the answers to our questions BEFORE the find log, after which you can log immediately, if something is wrong, we will contact you. Logs without replies are deleted without comment, the same applies to spoiler images! If you are in the team on site, please send each cacher who would like to log their personal answers - EC’s should ultimately be instructive.

Here are the questions:
1. You will find several fossils at the listed coordinates. Describes these and divide them into physical or trace fossils with justification.
2. Measure the height (listed Coordinates) above sea level with your GPS =?
3. When you have measured the altitude, what does that mean in relation to the time before 365AD and the fossils found?
4. At the waypoint you will also find a large fossil, what do you see here?
5. Also measure the height with your GPS and judge how something like this can get here in relation to the fossil found?
6. What are the reasons that can you find marine fossiles on land?
Have fun on your walk, if you have swimwear with you in summer, you can cool off, but watch out for the sea urchins!
