This is STONEBOW ATE (York telephone exchange)
Built in 1955 it now connects more than 30,000 homes and 3,000 business establishments.
further to this she is also connected to 16 other exchanges in the york area!
The mast on top was added in 1962 and began working in 1963, and uses microwave texhnology to transmit and recieve from other masts around North Yorks.
Although the BT service department vacated to leeds in 2003 this exchange still remain one of the busiest in the local area providing both standard copper lines, superfast broadband (fibre to the cabinet) and ultrafast broadband (fiber to the premises). This exchange also provides Ethernet (a privately owned or rented single / double fibre service to businesses with higer bandwith deands)
this exchange unfortunately flodded during the 2015 floods whenntge foss barrier was lifted due to failure. The foss (running behind the carpark) burst and flooded into the building and resulted in a loss of Telephone and Broadband services to many customers. The Tadcaster Bridge partially collapsed and Elland Bridge was under threat of collapse and both of these bridges carry BT services. Engineers worked around the clock in extremely difficult conditions to restore services and reroute cables.
