Geocache Description:

Across our nation from San Francisco to New York City were these giant mystical cement arrows 70 feet long and 40 feet wide spaced about 3 to 5 miles apart.  At each one of these cement arrows there was a 50 foot skeleton tower with a 36" Beacon Light mounted on top  They were called Beacon Stations.

These cement arrows with a beacon light guided aircraft pilots across our nation to deliver mail by air from 1924 to 1933. There were about 1500 of these beacon towers across our nation.  During the night these beacon lights flashed every 10 seconds so that the  pilot could find there way across this nation delivering air mail. During the day they followd the giant cement arrows.  Many of these cement arrows were painted orange so they could be easily detected during day time flights.

There were 136 of these giant cement arrows dotted across Kansas.  Most of them no longer exist but there are five of them that remain in place today.  These cement arrows can still be seen from the air.  Weeds have grown on most of them but they can still be somewhat distinguished.   One such tower and cement arrow exists here at this cache coordinate at the Anthony airport.   As you can see the tower exists, the cement arrow can be seen at the base of the tower, however the beacon light has been removed.

In the Gallery I have included a photo of a typical Beacon Station and Cement Arrow
