旧屋敷林

久下橋の下流左岸には不思議な光景が広がっています。
その辺り一帯には、広大な河川敷に点在する屋敷林、傾いた家屋の土台、苔むした石垣、土砂に埋もれた鳥居などがあり、これらは嘗て荒川舟運の一大基地として栄えた旧新川村（しんかわむら）の廃墟跡なのです。
寛永年間（1624－1644）の荒川流路変更によって、この地に新川河岸と呼ばれる舟運の港が生まれ、中流穀倉地帯の玄関口として大いに栄えました。
明治初期には、この村には98軒約500人の住人が居て、最大60石に及ぶ船が50隻近くあったと記録されています。
しかしその後、明治16年の高崎線の開通によって舟運は急速に衰退し、新川村は養蚕で細々と生計を立てるに至りましたが、昭和に入ると養蚕にも陰りが見え、さらに昭和15年の大洪水、昭和22年のカスリーン台風によって、村は消滅へと向かっていきました。
昭和46年、新川村に住んでいた荒川最後の鵜匠、長島政太郎さんが亡くなり、新川村の370年に及ぶ栄枯盛衰の歴史は幕を閉じたのでした。
今や、当時の河岸の賑わい、高瀬舟の雄姿、懐かしい村風景の記憶も、過ぎし歴史の一齣になり朽ち果てようとしています。
On the left bank of the river downstream from Kuge Bridge, there is a strange sight. In this area, there are several homestead woodland across the vast riverbed, leaning house foundations, mossy stone walls and Torii gates buried in the earth and sand. All of them are the ruins of the former Shinkawa Village which once flourished as a major base for the Arakawa River shipping industry. When the Arakawa River was rerouted during the Kanei era (1624-1644), a port called Shinkawa-kashi was established here and flourished as a gateway to the midstream granary. In the early Meiji period, the village had 98 houses and about 500 residents and it is recorded that there were nearly 50 boats with a maximum capacity of 60-koku. However, after the opening of the Takasaki Line in 1881, the boat traffic rapidly declined and the village began to make a modest living with raising sericulture. But in the Showa period (1926-1989), the sericulture industry began to fade away and the floods of 1940 and Typhoon Kathleen of 1947 brought the village to the brink of extinction. In 1971, Masataro Nagashima, the last Arakawa cormorant master who lived in the village, passed away and the 370-year history of the village has finished. Now, the memories of the bustling river banks, the magnificent sight of the Takase boats and the nostalgic scenery of the village at that time have become a part of the past history and are about to be decayed.
