El Mirador de Humboldt está situado en la base de la ladera de La Orotava, junto a la carretera de El Pinito. Desde él se divisan espectaculares vistas del Valle de la Orotava, entre las laderas de Tigaiga y Santa Úrsula y la silueta del Pico del Teide.
La leyenda dice que el científico y naturalista alemán Alexander Von Humboldt en el año 1799 visitó la isla de Tenerife y al parecer quedó absolutamente deslumbrado por la belleza del valle y sus magníficas vistas, se arrodilló ante el Valle de La Orotava cuando creyó coronada su ansiedad de belleza. El Teide le fascinó, se interrogó sobre ese paisaje, luchó por recordarlo y divulgarlo, y sus palabras, contenidas en un libro de crónicas magistrales, recoge lo que le pareció la isla y, y hoy se lee como si la estuviera viendo ahora mismo. Aquella visita de Humboldt, es el antecedente más antiguo que se recuerda de la campaña que ahora ha hecho el Gobierno de Canarias, con muchas complicidades estatales e internacionales, para que la Unesco considere aquel extraordinario paraje de Las Cañadas del Teide como patrimonio natural de la Humanidad. Motivo por el cual este mirador lleva el nombre del padre de la geografía moderna.
