Geocache Description:

This is a simple cache.  It is a baby soda bottle across the road from a significant historical site.  This cache is along the roadside.  You do not have to enter the fenced area to make the find.  And you would be trespassing if you do.  There is plenty of parking at the historical marker.

Mississippi has many historical mounds.  The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has created the Mississippi Mound Trail to tell the story of these mounds. These mounds are believed to have been built by Native Americans some 300 to 2100 years ago.  The earliest of these mounds are believed to have been built in the Middle Woodland Period.  The building of mounds continued through the Late Woodland Period and into the Mississippian Period.  Most Mississippian mounds were ceremonial in nature, rectangular, flat-topped earthen platforms that had temples or houses of important people on them.

This site consist of a set of mounds thought to been built starting in the Coles Creek Period (700 to 1200) and show use continuing into the Plaquemine Period (1200-1600).  Mound A stood only 16 feet tall and unlike most major mounds in an area, shows no evidence of having buildings on it.   Three smaller mounds also populate the area.  Mound B is some 90 feet north of Mound A and only shows as a slight rise in modern times.  Mound C was destroyed during road construction. Mounds D is a half mile away and shows signs of occupation well earlier than the Coles Creek period which it is thought to be built.  There are historic markers that tell the tale of the mounds.
