Recognising the value of letters in the late 18th Century, investment was made in upgrading routes between major cities to facilitate the transport of mail, allowing swifter and safer transit, and three mail coaches a day plied the route between Berwick and Edinburgh.
Ayton’s Old Statistical Account in the late 18th Century suggests that the road was quite new by then.
Blackadder’s map of 1797 has mile numbers counting down the number of miles to Berwick and so it would have been the main route between Edinburgh and Berwick – and, ultimately, London.
Blackadder’s numbers probably represented milestones along the route, most of which are now likely to be gone. There was a milestone near the final GZ; although I’ve never found it.
Likely a precursor to the A1, which runs close by, the Old Post Road is now a haven for walkers and cyclists.
Enjoy your visit!
