Geocache Description:

THE LEGEND OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Many believe the legendary Crystal Skulls were carved thousands or even tens of thousands of years ago by an ancient Mesoamerican Civilization.  Others think they may be relics from the legendary island of Alantis or proof that extraterrestrials visited the Aztec sometime before the Spanish conquest.

The mystery surrounding the origin of crystal skulls has drawn supernatural speculation. Legend has it that the crystal skulls have mystical powers, and are claimed to exhibit paranormal phenomena.
Some individuals believe in the paranormal claim that crystal skulls can produce a variety of miracles. Anna Mitchell-Hedges claimed that the skull she allegedly discovered could cause visions and cure cancer.

The most important fact to remember about the ancient Crystal Skulls is never to look into the eyes.

HOW A CRYSTAL SKULL WAS LOST IN THE KOOTENAYS

It's no big surprise that Gunpowder Gertie  - the Pirate Queen of the Kootenays was involved.  After all if she was capable of stealing the Provincial Police's own patrol boat, claim it as her own, and christen it the “Tyrant Queen” so why not something as small as a crystal skull?

The story is told about her attacking and boarding a steam ship one cold dark night. After a fierce battle Gertie and her crew made off with the Skull.  In the pusuit that followed the "Tyrant "Queen" ran aground on a rocky point located along the Kootenay River.  Gertie and her crew escaped by running into the nearby forest where they found several rock caves. Not wanting to be caught with the Skull in her pocession she found a cave that was perfect to hide her small treasure.
As with her other hidden ill-gotten gains the whereabouts of the Skull was never revealed and she took the secret to her grave with her.   It is said that she did leave a small clue near the rocks where the ship was grounded that would lead anyone lucky enough to figure out what it means to the location of the cave.
