We take for granted that we can have light with just a flick of a switch, but much goes on in between, from where it is generated to when it gets to our homes for us to use. Electricity is generated in power plants and moves through the eletricity grid which comprises of substations, transformers and power lines. The below picture shows a basic idea of how eletricity flows through the grid.

Electricity's unit is known as voltage, and this needs to be increased after it leaves the power plant so it can travel longer distances. When it gets near our homes the receving substation will reduce the voltage to a safe level to be consumed on our homes.
This cache is near the heritage listed Pine Street Substation. It was built in 1915 and used between 1917 to 1925, to provide electricity to the whole of the north shore, after it was recevied from where it was generated at Pyrmont power station. The substation is an unusal and rare representation of an Interwar gothic building. The facade is asymmetrical, featuing a Tudor inspired "tower", which incorporates crenellations (the identations on the top of the towers), with arched doorways and round headed windows a design common for this style of architecture.
The cache is placed within easy reach and no need to climb on anything or do anything dangerous to reach.
