The earliest known settlement in Merseyside was found at Greasby on Wirral, where a sandstone slab and pebble floor suggested it was used by nomadic hunters. Radiocarbon dating of the remains of burnt hazelnut shells found here indicate a time period of between 8300 BC and 8500 BC.
Greasby was an Anglo Saxon settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book as Gravesberie, derived from the Old English gräf (a grove) and burh (a fortified place). The name was later changed to Greasby by Old Norse speakers living in the area. The name of the village has changed many times including: Grauesberi, Grauesbyri, Grauisby (1093), Grauesbi (c.1155), Grauesby (c.1170), Griseby (1280) and Graysby (1610).
Before the Norman conquest in 1066, Greasby was owned by a man called Dunning, who might have been a bailiff or steward for the Earls of Mercia. After the invasion, all land in the area went to Hugh d'Avranches and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 was owned by Nigel de Burcy.
