The date of construction of Kisai Castle and the lord of the castle at the time of construction are unknown, but it was first seen in 1455 that Ashikaga Nariuji attacked the castle which was owned by Uesugi clan lord of Furukawa and was defended by Nagao and Kobanawa clans. Also, in 1563, Uesugi Terutora (Kenshin) took by storm Kisai Castle, which was defended by Oda Sukesaburo. In the 18th year of Tensho (1590), when Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the Kanto region, Matsudaira Yasushige became the lord of Kisai Castle with 20,000 koku. It was Matsudaira Yasushige who founded the Daiei Temple in Kisai and granted the temple territory to the Honei Temple in Hideyasu. Later, Tadatsune and Tadamoto Okubo became the lords of the castle and reorganized Kisai by moving Tamashiki Shrine to its present location. In 1632, Tadayoshi was transferred to Kano Castle in Mino Province, and Kisai Castle was abandoned. Excavations of Kisai Castle since 1930 have revealed that the castle was surrounded by double shoji ditches with a maximum width of 45 meters, indicating that the castle was heavily fortified in preparation for fierce battles. Weapons, armor and daily utensils from the Warring States Period to the early Edo Period have been excavated from the ruins of the castle and samurai residences at Kisai Castle. The unearthed artifacts are diverse, including domestic and foreign ceramics, metal products such as arrowheads, armor fittings, and flint, as well as a large amount of lacquer and wood products. In addition, jet-black helmets, gilded horse stirrups, lacquer bowls with crane designs, clogs, packing slips, spells and talismans were also excavated, all of which vividly bring back the lifestyle of the castle. Although the current Kisai Castle has been restored as a magnificent castle with a castle tower, it went against the historical fact. At that time, the castle was a single-story pavilion with earthen mounds and a moat around it.
