The Florida Cracker Trail is one of several historic routes that early pioneers used for driving cattle from range lands in the interior of the state to salt water ports for shipment to other destinations.  Today you can follow the route by car or horse.

If you look west from this gate you will see an overgrown road through the south side of Highlands Hammock State Park. You are standing along this historical route as that overgrown road is part of the actual Cracker Trail.
