Geocache Description:

Spirit Quest - Laurie Cache

As this cache is located inside a cemetery caches, please be respectful of the grounds, and any possible visitors or mourners that might not understand what we are doing. There is NO need to disturb any of the graves or monuments. Limit your search to daylight hours only please. Remember to allow enough time to find the needed information before dusk.

This cache is placed in honor of Laurie 1953 - 2021 She was known as Half Canadian and Scooter the wonder dog to many and Wizard of Ooze, the cache reviewer. She was a Board Member when WSGA was newly formed. During her time in Whatcom county she was known for her Halloween themed events, one, Geo Monster Ball, became a mega event. She moved to the coast, and started the Cache Dash Splash events in Long Beach. Over the years she held a total of 37 events, which does not include all of the events she took part in during her time with the British Columbia geocaching association and WSGA. She followed in the steps of Midwest cache owners who used Spirit Quest for cemetery caches when she was the first in Washington to use Spirit Quest for her Whatcom County Cemetery series. We have dedicated this Spirit Quest cache to her for all she did for the Caching community, Reviewer, board member, event host, player, teacher and friend. She will be sorely missed by all.

History on the cemetery:  The Carnation Cemetery was first started in 1905 on land donated by Fredrick Bagwell. This was the second site for a cemetery for the town of Carnation (at that time Carnation was still Tolt). The first cemetery for Carnation was the Pleasant Hill Cemetery located near SE 8th ST and Highway 203, that cemetery had severe issues with flooding, from the nearby Snoqualmie river. When the Carnation Cemetery was started in 1905 the bodies that had been at Pleasant Hill were moved to the new cemetery. Fredrick Bagwell was the president of the cemetery association but not for long as he was also the first person interned into the cemetery. This initial cemetery was mainly for the Masons though was open to anyone.

In 1906 the Independent Order of Odd Fellows started a second cemetery. This new cemetery was located to south of the service road.

In 1957 the Mason Cemetery Association was dissolved and turned over to the IOOF. In response to this the IOOF created a new cemetery association and made the two cemeteries into one. This association ran the cemetery up until 1994 when the city of Carnation took officially took over. The cemetery has approximately 800 burials.

The final for this cache is located inside the Carnation Cemetery. At this particular cemetery there are no posted rules or hours, but as I always do I ask that the cacher only search for this cache during daylight hours out of respect for the cemetery. While you are here please take your time and look around, and enjoy all of the history here, but remember to be respectful, since the cemetery is still active it is possible that there could be mourners or other visitors that might not understand what we are doing. The cache itself is NOT located near any graves, you are looking for a regular sized tube with a flip top lid.

Congratulations goes to for CO-FTF.
