In 1969, there was a giant 11 ton petrified log put on display at the Bogalusa public library in Washington parish. The log was found by Mrs. Sam (Betty) Harriel who noticed it lying on the bank of the Pearl River east of Varnado. According to the Era Leader, it was apparently dredged from the river bottom during the desnagging operations by the US Corps of Engineers. Through joint efforts of several people it was agreed that it would be brought to Bogalusa for display and the public library seemed to be the perfect spot. The weight of the log was estimated by Southern Timber officials to be between 10 and 11 tons. It is 3 feet in diameter and 14 foot long and is hollow all the way through.

What is petrified wood and how is it formed?
Petrified wood is a fossil or rock that forms when plant material is buried by sediment. It is unable to decay due to the lack of oxygen, and once buried, groundwater flows through the sediment replacing the original plant material with minerals. Minerals such as silica(white), hematite(red and pink), geothite(yellow, brown and orange), manganese dioxide(purple and blue), pyrite(black), silica dioxide(tan) or pure reduced iron mineral(green) are found in different types of petrified wood. Once this happens it then becomes a fossil that resembles the original woody material. It looks just like the original piece with the same features of bark. Petrified wood may have the appearance of different colors representing these minerals. The most common colors found in petrified wood are brown, grey or red. There have been instances where blue, yellow, green or white have been found. The color of the petrified wood varies depending on the abundance and type of mineral abosorbed by the wood.
