The first Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1891 in Great Holland on the Common (now Little Clacton Road); the building still exists as a residential property called Wesley Cottage. As the congregation grew, this new Chapel was built beside the then recently constructed New Manor Road (now Main Road) which ʻby-passed ʻ the old village centre around the square as motorised traffic began to increase.
It is unusual for a Methodist Chapel, being painted white and having a spire, more reminiscent of a traditional New England building.
