Placing an actual cache on campus as a reward for completing the Where's Pete? Discovery Trail
Official trail map here: https://wellness.okstate.edu/site-files/documents/trail_guide.pdf
This version 2 of the Where's Pete Discovery Trail Geocache exists because a new building is now on top of where the first final was. The day I got the physical plant to install the final permanent area for the cache, my former department head (Horticulture and Landscape Architecture) died. Her name was Janet Cole (hortcacher), and after I introduced her to geocaching she got really excited and surpassed my finds. So this is now in memory of her. She would get a kick out of that.
In cooperation with OSU's first Chief Wellness Officer (Dr. Suzy Harrington), OSU Marketing, OSU Admissions, the OSU Physical Plant and others, I placed 15 bricks with Pistol Pete embedded in them across the core of campus. The Where's Pete? Discovery Trail is accessible 24/7 for visitors, and the bricks are placed in locations that aren't always noticed on campus, to showcase some of the campus' hidden treasures. The trail is part of the health initiatives of America's Healthiest Campus®. The total trail length is a little over 2 miles, all on paved walks and kid-friendly. After that kind of walk, we wanted to provide a reward, so we had geocaching-related medallions made to celebrate the exploration of campus. After completing your trail map questions, you can pick up your medallion at the Student Union. To draw geocachers, I am placing an actual geocache on campus so the trail will count as a find. The questions to be answered along the trail will have clues as to the final location.
