This Geocache will be in place between the Summer Solstice on June 21 and Autumnal Equinox on September 22. This is our 64th Seasonal Cache.
Summer solstice 2022 in Northern Hemisphere will be on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 5:14 A.M. EDT In the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year when the Sun is farthest north. In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged. The summer solstice marks the first day of the season of summer. The declination of the Sun on the (northern) summer solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (23° 27').
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, respectively, in the sense that the length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a maximum for the year. Of course, daylight saving time means that the second Sunday in March has 23 hours and the first Sunday in November has 25 hours, but these human meddling's with the calendar and do not correspond to the actual number of daylight hours.
Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as "midsummer". Today, however, in some countries and calendars it is seen as the beginning of summer.
