Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built between 1886 and 1894. The giant moveable roadways that lift up for passing ships, are considered an engineering marvel to this day.
Originally painted chocolate brown, Tower Bridge was re-painted red, white and blue in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
The bridge design allows road traffic to cross the river whilst maintaining river access to the docks in the busy Upper Pool. The high-level walkways allowed the public to cross the bridge when it was raised, but were closed in 1910 due to lack of use. Any vessels higher than 30 feet can request the bridge opening free of charge. The service is available any time, day or night, 365 days per year. The bridge is raised around 850 times each year.
