As part of the construction of the highway, money is set aside for the beautification and flood mitigation of the surrounding area. In the high desert of western Nevada, the ground often cannot absorb the all the rain from a major storm. The rocks surrounding the highways are often distributed as in this area to reduce the erosion that would otherwise occur.
