Museet blev stiftet af brygger Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). Glyptotekets faste samling rummer ca. 10.000 kunstværker fordelt på to hovedsamlinger.
Den antikke samling
I den ene samling kan du se Nordeuropas største samling af antik kunst, både ægyptiske, græske, etruskiske og romerske værker gennem 3500 års kunst og historie.
Den moderne samling
Den anden samling rummer fransk og dansk kunst fra det 19. og 20. århundrede, bl.a. værker af Eckersberg, Købke, Monet, Rodin, van Gogh, Degas samt en af verdens bedste samlinger af Gauguins kunst.
Vinterhaven
I den store, prægtige subtropiske Vinterhave i museets midte er der en Café. Glyptoteket præsenterer ofte skiftende udstillinger, der vises som en integreret del af museumsoplevelsen.

Jeg er særlig tilknytning til Glyptoteket, idet min morfar var murermester og stod for udvidelsen med den nye tilbygning. Mens jeg læste kusnthistorie på Københavns Universitet, lå en del af undervisningen i den franske afdeling. Jeg arbejdede i mange år på skolen 100 meter fra museet, og vi havde nært samarbejde med museet og som underviser i billedkunst, havde jeg ofte børnene ovre på museet og tegne. Jeg underviste bl.a. Gaugains barnebarn, idet Gaugain havde en dansk kone og boede i Danmark en periode.

The antique collection
In one collection you can see Northern Europe's largest collection of ancient art, both Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman works through 3500 years of art and history.
The modern collection
The second collection contains French and Danish art from the 19th and 20th centuries, i.a. works by Eckersberg, Købke, Monet, Rodin, van Gogh, Degas and one of the world's best collections of Gauguin's art.
The winter garden
In the large, magnificent subtropical Winter Garden in the middle of the museum there is a Café. The Glyptotek often presents changing exhibitions that are displayed as an integral part of the museum experience.

I am particularly connected to the Glyptoteket, as my grandfather was a master builder and was responsible for the expansion with the new extension. While I was studying art at the University of Copenhagen, part of the teaching was in the French department. I worked for many years at the school 100 meters from the museum, and we worked closely with the museum and as a teacher of art, I often had the children at the museum to draw. Among other things, I teach Gaugain's granddaugther, as Gaugain had a Danish wife and lived in Denmark for a period.
