Tanto si eres de la capital como si has visitado la ciudad alguna vez, habrás podido disfrutar de un agradable paseo por la Alameda de Santa Cruz. Si no lo has hecho… ¡Este es tu momento! Y como dicen que todos los días se aprende algo, esto podría ser tu “algo” de hoy 😊
Construida en 1787 con el nombre de la Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena, fue originariamente pensada como espacio para lo que tú estás haciendo ahora mismo: pasear, reunirse y charlar al cobijo de los árboles.
El capitán de Canarias por ese entonces, Miguel de la Grúa Talamanca, se percató de que la ciudad carecía de un lugar de esparcimiento cerca del mar para los lugareños (en ese momento el mar llegaba a escasos metros del sitio en el que te encuentras ahora).
Durante sus más de 230 años en pie, ha sufrido pequeños cambios en su nombre acorde con los momentos históricos. Lo único que se ha mantenido siempre es la connotación de “alameda”, pese a que nunca haya tenido un solo álamo plantado…
Casi 100 años después de su construcción, la escritora Olivia Stone describe en su libro “Tenerife y sus seis satélites” su visita a este lugar el 5 de septiembre de 1883. Dejemos que sea ella la que nos cuente el ambiente que se respiraba en el entorno del caché:
“La Sociedad Filarmónica Santa Cecilia daba un concierto aquella noche en la Alameda, frente al hotel. Los músicos, con instrumentos de cuerda, interpretaron extraordinariamente bien algunos valses de Straus y los Cantos Canarios de Teobaldo Power, un compositor local.
El ambiente dentro del parque era muy atractivo. Una avenida recta que formaba un paseo estaba muy bien iluminada por lámparas de aceite colgadas a ambos lados. Bajo los árboles había asientos y, al final del paseo, un quiosco techado, brillantemente iluminado y repleto de objetos etiquetados y numerados.
Aunque estos jardines son públicos y pertenecen al Ayuntamiento, cobran tres peniques por la entrada, que incluye un número para una rifa que recibes al entrar, consistente en un pequeño trozo de papel enrollado que, al ponerlo en agua, se desenrolla mostrando así el número. ¡Casi siempre está en blanco!. Sin embargo, si tiene un número, el premio puede consistir en un espejo, un botellín de cerveza, jarrones baratos, chucherías de cristal o adornos de porcelana.
Los paseantes eran chicos y chicas, la mayoría de clase media. Llevaban trajes de color blanco, azul o rosa fuerte, y los vistosos y modernos sombreros sustituían a la elegante mantilla, que lucían algunas que iban de negro. La noche era cálida pues la temperatura varía poco entre el día y la noche. Nuestro termómetro parece haberse trabado pues siempre marca 80ºF (26,6 ºC)”.

If, however, a number should be inside, the prize gained may consist of a looking glass, a bottle of beer, cheap vases, trumpery glass, or china ornaments.
The promenaders consisted of young men and girld, chiefly of the middle classes. The dresses were brilliant pinks, blues, and whites, modern and gaudy hats being mostly worn. The night was warm, as, indeed, every night in Santa Cruz is, the temperature between day and night varying little. Our thermometer, during our stay in the town, remained steadily at 80 °F (26.6 °C), as if glued".
