Geocache Description:

I came across this spot on our last day in Iceland after a visit to the Blue Lagoon. It is signposted as a picnic area & only when you are closer do you realise it is a memorial to the 14 men who died when the Liberator B-34 Hot Stuff bomber crashed into Mt Fagradalsfjall on 3rd May 1943 having taken off from Bovington Field, England, with interim stops at Prestwick & Reykjavik en route to Washington. This Liberator was the first heavy bomber in the US 8th Air Force to complete 25 missions in World War 2. The memorial was dedicated on 3rd May, 2018, 75 years to the day of the disaster.

The memorial is very close to my heart as I lost an uncle in Aug 1944 when his Lancaster was lost over Konigsberg.

The cache - a plastic box - is located well behind the memorial out of respect for those who died. It is well tucked in & easier to access from the rear. Please tuck well in to protect it from the elements. There is plenty of room for trackables. I have left a Northern Lights keyring for the FTF.
