This cache is dedicated to my Grampa TA who was once given the title, "Captain of Steamboat Rock". The following is an excerpt from a local newspaper in 1974:
"A SPECIAL AWARD was given to Thor A. Hermans after city council meeting last Wednesday in Soap Lake. Mayor Dale Vickrey, far right, presented Hermans with a seaman's cap and pronounced him "Captain of Steamboat Rock" in reference to the famous rock at Steamboat Park near Coulee Dam. Boyd Mordhorst, far right, came up with the idea when he decided Thor, longtime resident of Soap Lake would make a good captain of the rock. Other council members pictured are Marina Romary and Ken Lee." (See photo)
My Grampa, who was known simply as TA, was a special man. With a gregarious personality, he would light up the room when he entered and always had a story or joke to liven things up. All of us grandkids wanted to hangout with him and he somehow made each one of us feel special. I had the priviledge of working with him and learning the building trade which I do to this day. Seldom does a day go by without us referencing him in some way.
To get to this cache, turn off the highway at the Steamboat Rock Park entrance road. In about 500 feet, turn right and head north up the old highway about half a mile. You a looking for a medium sized loc-n-loc with a pen, some trinkets, a couple trackables and a FTF prize.
While there, make sure you "tip your cap" to Grampa TA. One of the greatest men I've ever known.
