At last count there were 79 fire stations in New Zealand run by career fire-fighters and 360 volunteer run stations. This is the newest, the new Appleby station replacing the station in the very old ex pea viner building on State Highway 6, nearby. The volunteers are really enjoying the new purpose-built facility and thought it appropriate that they answered a call-out before everything was quite ready for them, the siren not yet ready for action.
Note: I actually hid this cache in October last year but it turned out there were some processes to go through before it could be published. This is probably no longer the newest fire station in New Zealand, but this hide still celebrates the fact that Appleby has a new fire station after years of operating out of a historic building.
