Girl Scout Troop 3198 Bronze Award Geocache Series #1 - NYC Chinatown was severely impacted by COVID-19. This bronze award places a series of caches around Chinatown parks/playgrounds to encourage people to visit the local areas that were impacted by COVID-19.
Columbus Park was the most dangerous ghetto area of immigrant New York, as portrayed in the book and film Gangs of New York. Back then, the park's site was part of the Five Points neighborhood, in the area known as Mulberry Bend. It was renamed Columbus Park in 1911, in honor of Christopher Columbus. Today, the park often serves as a gathering place for the local Chinese community, where the neighborhood meets up here to play mahjong and cards and Chinese chess, perform traditional Chinese music and practice tai chi in the early mornings. The kids play in the park and play with each other. We want to hide a geocache there because there are none in this area and it is across the street to where our girl scout troop meets. We want more people to come visit the Chinatown area.
