La Via Sacra è l'asse stradale più importante e più antico della valle del Foro, a Roma, così chiamato dopo che Romolo e Tito Tazio vi ebbero firmato la pace della guerra, causata dal Ratto delle Sabine. La strada faceva parte del tradizionale percorso del Trionfo Romano e, partendo dalla sommità del Campidoglio conduceva al Colosseo attraverso il Foro Romano. La strada ha fatto da cornice a molti fatti e misfatti della storia di Roma, alle solenni feste religiose, ai magnifici trionfi dei generali vittoriosi e alla folla quotidiana che si radunava nelle Basiliche.
Dal regno di Augusto, la Via Sacra ebbe un ruolo nella cerimonia dell'Apoteosi con la quale gli imperatori romani defunti venivano formalmente divinizzati. Il corpo dell'imperatore, nascosto sotto una maschera funeraria di cera, veniva trasportato su un drappo dal Palatino lungo la Via Sacra fino al Foro, dove si tenevano le orazioni funebri prima che il corteo di Cavalieri e Senatori riprendesse il suo corso verso Campo Marzio.

A walk near the Roman Forum to get to know the places and the history of the Via Sacra.
The Via Sacra was the main street of ancient Rome, leading from the top of the Capitoline Hill, through some of the most important religious sites of the Forum, to the Colosseum. The road was part of the traditional route of the Roman Triumph that began on the outskirts of the city and proceeded through the Roman Forum. Later it was paved and during the reign of Nero it was lined with colonnades. The road provided the setting for many deeds and misdeeds of Rome's history, the solemn religious festivals, the magnificent triumphs of victorious generals, and the daily crowd that gathered in the Basilicas.
From the reign of Augustus, the Via Sacra played a role in the Apotheosis ceremony by which deceased Roman Emperors were formally deified. The body of the Emperor, concealed under a wax death mask, was carried on a pall from the Palatine hill down the Via Sacra into the Forum, where funeral orations were held before the procession of Knights and Senators resumed its course to the Campus Martius.
