CACHE STORY:
As with some other caches in the village, this cache is located precisely on the 2 degrees West meridian. Like the Greenwich meridian this meridian runs from South pole to North pole. The significane of this meridian was pointed out by a surveyor friend.
The concept of Geocaching is based on either geographical coordinates (Latitude, Longitude) or grid coordinates (i.e. Ordnance Survey National Grid, see Wikipedia for more detailed info). The OSNG-GB projection is based upon a Transverse Mercator projection with parameters including a Central Meridian of 2 degrees West. Hence the importance of 2 degrees West.
From a geodesy point of view, one can say that Newburgh is centrally located in the UK.
