Zgodovina letalstva obravnava razvoj mehanskih naprav za letenje, od zgodnjih jadralnih letal in zmajev do zrakoplovov težjih od zraka z lastnim pogonom, letal z nadzvočno hitrostjo in vesoljskih plovil. Prvi oprijemljiv dokaz o zamisli letečih naprav je knjiga angleškega duhovnika in znanstvenika Rogerja Bacona Skrivnosti umetnosti in narave iz 13. stoletja. V njej je opisal balon in zračno ladjo ter celo narisal osnovne oblike. Skoraj pet stoletji pa se je razvijala zamisel letalnega stroja z mahajočimi krili – po vzoru ptice. Tudi slavni italijanski umetnik Leonardoda Vinci je skiciral in preučil celo vrsto takih modelov.

The history of aviation deals with the development of mechanical flying devices, from early gliders and kites to heavier-than-self-propelled aircraft, supersonic-speed aircraft, and spacecraft. The first tangible proof of the idea of flying devices is a book by the English priest and scientist Roger Bacon Secrets of Art and Nature from the 13th century. In it, he described a balloon and an airship and even drew the basic shapes. For almost five centuries, however, the idea of a flying machine with waving wings - following the example of a bird - has been evolving. Even the famous Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci sketched and studied a whole range of such models.

15. oktobra 1783 sta bila prva pilota Pilatre de Rozier ter Marquis d`Arlandes. Toplozračni balon ni bil več privezan na zemljo med letom. 19. januarja 1784 je ogromen Montgolfierjev toplozračni balon poletel v višino 3000 čevljev nad mestom Lynos s sedmimi potniki. Tako se je odprla bitka za modro nebo. Porajale so se ideje, kdo bo prvi preletel svet s toplozračnim balonom. Toplozračni balon je poletel 100 let pred prvim letalom.

On October 15, 1783, the first pilots were Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes. The hot air balloon was no longer tied to the ground during the flight. On January 19, 1784, a huge Montgolfier hot air balloon flew 3,000 feet above the city of Lynos with seven passengers. Thus opened the battle for the blue sky. Ideas arose as to who would be the first to fly around the world with a hot air balloon. The hot air balloon flew 100 years before the first aircraft.
