Burden Museum and Gardens began in the late 1800's as Windrush Plantation. The home and property passed through generations to Ione Burden, Steele Burden and Jeanette Monroe. The family has sought to preserve a place to foster agricultural and horticultural research, to gain appreciation of Louisiana's rural and cultural heritage and a place to enjoy nature.

The Rural Life Museum is one of the top 10 Outdoor museums in the world according to the British museum. The museum takes you back to the 19th century, Louisiana farm life.

The Botanic Gardens is a collection of 5 specialty gardens, multiple walking trails, a boardwalk over the Black Swamp and 2 event facilities.

There are approximately 3 miles of trails ranging from .05 to 0.95 miles. The backbone of these trails was originally designed by Steel Burden as meandering path ways through part of the Burden Woods.

Today the Burden Museum and Gardens is under the Stewardship of the Burden Foundation, LSU and the LSU Ag Center. The museum is open 8-5 daily. Do take the time to explore and appreciate the areas diversity of nature in the heart of Baton Rouge.
