Geocache Description:

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" was the first of the animated television specials based on "The Peanuts" comic strip by Charles Schulz. The story focuses on Charlie Brown and his friends who are developing a Christmas play.  Charlie Brown is depressed despite the holiday season and is frustrated by the commercialism associated with Christmas.  Unable to come to a consenus on the direction the play should go, Charlie and Linus go to the lot to choose a Christmas tree.  Not wanting the big, pink aluminum Christmas tree that Lucy suggested, Charlie instead chooses the only live tree on the lot--a very small sapling.  The Peanuts Gang scoffs at the small tree prompting Charlie to question if anyone knows the meaning of Christmas.  Linus steps into the spotlight and quotes scripture detailing the events of Christ's birth.  Charlie takes the tree home where he attempts to decorate it by hanging a single ball on the tree causing the loss of all of the its needles.  Moved by Linus's speech and realizing how hard they were on Charlie, the gang finds the tree, repairs and decorates it.  Charlie hears them hummimg Christmas carols and joins them for a chorus of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."

Released in 1965, there was concern that the religious overtones would be too much for the show.  Schulz was adamant saying "if we don't do it, who will?"  Schulz scripted the show so that it was virtually impossible to edit the Linus scene out. The show premiered on December 7 and an estimated 45% of those watching television tuned in.  The reviews were great and the show won an Emmy the following spring.  56 years later it is still a holiday favorite!
