ELDORADO FALLS

“South Boulder Creek makes its way noisily over a great rock pile in three short leaps and a rolling cascade, with a vertical drop of only 17 feet in a 60-foot stretch of water.

- Marc Conly, Waterfalls of Colorado

South Boulder Creek slips through jagged rock formations in a picturesque canyon setting at Eldorado Falls (Taken during low water, Oct. 2021).

Eldorado Falls is not what I'd call a true waterfall, but it is still quite charming nonetheless. I have seen several names for this waterfall: Eldorado Canyon Cascades, Eldorado Cascades, South Boulder Creek Cascades, and so on. I think Eldorado Falls has the best ring to it. The falls is a collection of a few short leaps of 5-10 feet in a beautiful canyon setting, with boulders jutting out of the canyon walls and the creek itself. Eldorado Falls is a great hike near Denver or Boulder if you want a fun hike without the huge amount of crowds commonly found around here. Chataqua Park has NEVER been so busy!

There are many ways to get to Eldorado Falls, but I recommend taking the Meyer Ranch Loop out of the Ethol Harrold Trailhead. You can find the trail I used here. This is a very fun and moderate trail that is great for a quick stroll! Not a whole lot of elevation gain or anything.

This area does contain some private/state park property so make sure to obney signs and regulations. The cache itself and the falls are on public lands, but many of these trails are not. Be careful!

Anyways, here is how to find this cache:

HOW TO FIND:

Wherever you choose to start from, find where you are on these wonderful maps around the trails and locate the obviously marked "FALLS." Make your way around whatever trail you are on to this point.

There is a large bridge that crosses S. Boulder Creek where the falls is. Nearby is a stone staircase at the south end of the bridge. The falls is alongside this staircase, and the cache is also near here. There is a large :"ship's prow" shaped boulder that marks where the cache is.

At the "ship's prow" rock, crouch down to this small cave. The cache is in here.

The cache. Have fun!
