Anglo Norman Mottes and Baileys generally incorporated several important features:
A motte consists of a mound of earth, approximately five to seven metres in height
The keep was strong wooden tower on top of the motte itself, It served as a lookout, an armed stronghold, and the most secure defensive position.
The keep was accessed by steps cut into the motte.
The bailey surrounded the motte and contained the stables, barracks and kitchens.
The bailey was protected by a wooden palisade.
A ditch surrounded the bailey and the motte. Sometimes this was filled with water.
Entry to the castle was controlled by a gatehouse.
Sometimes a drawbridge was built over the ditch, which could be drawn up in case of danger.
Anglo Norman Mottes and Baileys are indeed fairly common feature within the Irish landscape
